What a month!

March was jam‑packed with eight events celebrating our annual March into Sustainability month. We kicked things off promoting Clean Up Australia Day, with two community clean‑ups taking place in Wangaratta and Glenrowan. We then teamed up with Ovens Landcare Network for a screening of Future Council, which is an inspiring documentary about eight young people traveling around Europe meeting CEOs and business leaders to challenge their sustainability practices.

Next on the calendar was a Water Smart Gardening seminar with Liz from Sustainable Gardening Australia, where participants picked up plenty of practical tips for low‑water, low‑waste gardens. The following weekend we supported the Autumn Harvest Festival in Whitfield, hosted by Sustainable King Valley and the King Valley Food Hub. The event had an abundance of local produce to buy, and hands‑on learning experienced about preserving, beekeeping and propagating. Not to mention, the locals never fail to impress with the monster zucchini competition!

Our final weekend started with River Guardians Day, featuring a platypus conservation experience and a family‑friendly carp fishing competition, helping remove pest carp from local waterways. The biggest carp caught measured in at 69.5cm! This was a great partnership between the Rural City of Wangaratta and North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA).

We wrapped up at the Wangaratta Community Garden with two sessions led by Natasha from Beingreen Permaculture: a veggie garden planning workshop, followed by a hands‑on kids activity getting muddy, learning about soil and making seed bombs to take home. That evening we encouraged the community to switch off lights and appliances between 8.30-9.30pm for Earth Hour.

While all of this was happening, Wangaratta Landcare & Sustainability had a 'sustainable swaps' display at the Wangaratta Library for the month, showcasing easy everyday items that can be swapped for something more sustainable, such as recycled paper, keep cups, loose leaf tea and coffee, and soap dispensers. Their engaging display also gave the community an opportunity to add their own suggestions for great sustainable swaps.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for one (or many!) events. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
