Frequently Asked Questions

Who can receive organics bags?

Only property owners who pay the green bin waste charge, and their tenants, are eligible to receive organics (caddy liner) bags. The cost of supplying these bags is included in the green bin charge, which is listed as a separate line item on the rates notice.

Why don’t all residents receive organics bags?

Not all properties receive a green bin service. The charge paid by participating properties covers the cost of organics (caddy liner) bags only, and therefore only these properties are eligible to receive them.

What can go in an organics bag?

  • Food scraps
  • Dairy products
  • Egg shells
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Meat and bones
  • Paper towel and tissues
  • Cooking oils and fats
  • Small branches
  • Garden pruning and weeds
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves and flowers

  • Cat Litter
  • Pizza Boxes
  • Shredded paper
  • Paper shopping bags

How many bags does each property receive?

Property owners who pay the green bin waste charge, and their tenants, are entitled to receive two rolls of organics (caddy liner) bags per year.

Can residents receive more than two rolls?

No. The annual allocation applies equally to all properties and is capped to help ensure waste charges do not need to increase.

When can organics bags be collected?

Organics bags can be collected at any time during the year, provided that:

the collection location is open; bags are in stock; the property has not exceeded its annual allocation.

Where can residents collect organics bags?

Organics bags can be collected from:

  • Council’s Government Centre

  • The Library

What if a collection location runs out of bags?

Occasionally, organics bags may be temporarily unavailable due to high demand.

If this occurs: staff should advise when stock is expected to return; residents can continue using their green bin without bags, or line their kitchen caddy with paper towel or newspaper in the meantime.

Do I need to knot my organics bag?

No. Please do not tie the organics bag into a knot when placing it in your green organics bin.

Knotted bags do not break down properly during the composting process. If a bag has been knotted, it should be placed in your general waste bin instead.
