School Crossings

The Rural City of Wangaratta is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users—especially our youngest pedestrians. School crossings are a vital part of our community’s road safety network, helping children and families travel to and from school safely every day.
Staying Safe Around School Crossings

School crossings are clearly marked and supervised during school terms. They are active on weekdays, typically between:
- 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM
- 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Crossings are identified by:
- Red and white posts
- Orange children’s crossing flags
- Painted road lines
- Flashing lights (at some locations)
- A crossing supervisor in high-visibility uniform
For Drivers:
- Slow down in school zones—speed limits are reduced to 40 km/h during active times.
- Stop when a supervisor displays a stop sign or when flags are present.
- Never overtake a vehicle stopped at a crossing.
- Avoid distractions and be prepared to stop at all times.
- Respect crossing supervisors—they are trained to protect our children.
For Pedestrians and Cyclists:
- Always use the designated crossing.
- Wait for the whistle (two short blasts) before crossing.
- Walk, don’t run across the road.
- Dismount bicycles before crossing.
- Stay within the lines and cross in front of the supervisor.
