Find a Practitioner

When working on new builds or renovations, it is important that the works be completed by qualified professionals. The Building and Plumbing Commission and Consumer Affairs Victoria have free, searchable databases available for Building Practitioners, Licenced Plumbers, and Engineers available for you to search and confirm that your contractors have the right credentials for the job.

Check out each of the tabs below to learn more.

Building Practitioners

Step 1.Search for a Building Practitioner

In Victoria, you’ll need to use a registered builder or building company for domestic building work worth more than $10,000. But if the job involves only one type of work (such as painting or glazing), the person or company you use does not need to be registered.

Step 2.What happens if you don't use a registered practitioner

There are a number of risks that come with not working with a registered practitioner. If you engage an unregistered builder on work valued over $10,000 you will risk receiving poor quality work and not be covered by domestic building insurance.

Plumbers

Step 1.Search for a Plumber

There is a difference between Registered and Licensed plumbers. You can search for licensed plumbers below.

Step 2.Plumbing works

Not all plumbing works need a licensed plumber, some can be completed by registered plumbers, and some can be completed by owners.

Owners

Owners can:

  1. Replace showerheads
  2. Tap washers
  3. Clean and maintain above ground drain grates or pits
  4. Connect washing machines to existing taps
  5. Install tap mounted filters
  6. Clear blockages using plungers or drain snakes.
