Bin Service FAQ's

Reports of a missed bin collection should be reported no later than 2 working days after the missed collection to ensure that cause can be investigated and verified.

Council officers have real time access to CCTV and GPS tracking of kerbside trucks, enabling cause of missed collections to be investigated promptly.

Please note that:

• You cannot order an extra collection or ask for the truck to return if you did not have your bins ready for collection prior to 6am on day of scheduled collection.
• Bins exceeding 75kg in weight and/or are overfilled (i.e. lid open) may not be collected due to risks posed to vehicles and public amenity (littering).

To allow your missed bin collection request to be investigated and verified you will need to:

1. Report a Missed Bin Collection or contact Rural City of Wangaratta direct on (03) 5722 0888
2. Leave the bin out on the nature strip
3. Allow 2 working days for the waste truck to return

• Bin collection will occur between 6am and 6pm on scheduled day of collection.

• Instances where it is verified that missed collection was the direct fault of Council or the collection contractor, an additional collection will be scheduled within 3 working days of the reported event. Bins are to remain available for collection on the kerbside.
• Once bins have been emptied, bins are to be removed from the kerbside and relocated within the premise of the property within 24 hours of collection (refer to Local Law No. 1 sub clause 64.1.3)

• Contamination occurs when people place the wrong item in the wrong bin. To ensure the long-term viability and effectiveness of the garbage, organic and recycling kerbside systems, your cooperation is required.
• Council has introduced a four-strike contamination policy. This policy will use both education and enforcement to reduce the rate of contamination in Council bins.
• If a garbage, organics or recycling bin containing contamination is presented 4 times within a 4-year period, on the fourth occasion, the bin will be removed and the charges will remain on the property’s rates notice.
• If Council becomes aware of a situation that is causing ongoing contamination issues i.e. dementia or disability, bins will be taken away and more appropriate bins will be issued to the resident

Damaged bins should be reported via a CRMS (customer request)

• To allow time for the repair of your damaged bin, you will need to: 

1. Complete and submit a request via the button below
2. Ensure the bin is empty
3. Once your bin has been emptied on your scheduled collection day, please leave the empty damaged bin on the nature strip.

The bin will be repaired/replaced within 5 working days – if this does not occur, please contact Rural City of Wangaratta.

You can submit a request to replace a stolen bin. Your replacement bin will be the same size as the bin that's registered to your property.

Report stolen bin

A request to cancel a collection service or a apply for a waste fee exemption can be considered by council in accordance with the Rural City of Wangaratta Waste Charge Policy. Residents should review this document prior to applying to understand the circumstances under which a cancellation will be considered by Council.

Cancel a waste service

• Garbage and recycling are compulsory services for rural and urban areas. However you can request to increase the number of bins at your property or upsize your garbage service to a 240L bin or your recycling bin to a 360L bin.
• Organics is a compulsory service for urban areas however you can request to increase the number of bins at your property. 
• Urban areas include Wangaratta, Glenrowan, Hamilton Park, Milawa and Oxley.

Property owners and landlords of residential and commercial properties can submit applications for bin collection services to a new property or upsize/downsize a service on an existing property.

• Only owners, landlords or approved property managers can submit an application.
• Residents renting will need to contact owners, landlords or property managers to submit applications on their behalf.

Request new bin service, upsize/downsize bin

• Please put your bins out the evening before they are scheduled to be collected.
• Make sure there is at least 50cm between bins so the truck drivers can lift the bins.
• Place your bins at least 1m from parked cars, trees and power poles.
• To keep truck drivers safe ensure that there is 3m clearance between the top of your bin and electricity wires.

• Bins must not exceed approximately 70 kilograms in weight as the truck may not be able to lift the bins. If you have major difficulty pushing the full bin, then it may be more than the required weight limit.

For example 360L recycling bins filled with glass may result in a non-collection; Organics bins that are filled to the top with wet lawn clippings or fruit may be too heavy to collect (try leaving the lid open to dry the contents up); Garbage bins containing unauthorised materials such as brick and concrete may result in the truck being unable to collect the bin.

• Only authorised material may be put in bins. If you are unsure of what can go in what bin please check Council’s waste website for more information or contact Council directly.
