The Victorian Government is standardising household waste and recycling services across the state. All Victorian council kerbside waste services will move to a 4-bin system.
The glass collection service will be delivered in the following township areas:
Within the expanded urban area of Wangaratta, extending to include its low-density rural living areas and the adjacent rural townships.
If your property is eligible for the glass collection service, you will receive a letter during June confirming that you will be provided with a purple bin.
Residents will receive glass bins and collection services at no charge during the 25/26 financial year.
The occasional broken bottle and jar is okay in your purple glass recycling bin.
Broken windows, mirrors, or glassware can’t be recycled and should be placed in your red bin.
Glass bins will start being delivered from July. If your property is included in the service, you’ll receive a letter during June with more information.
The purple bins have a capacity of 80L. This bin is about 40% smaller than the smallest red bin available.
All of these items must be placed in your red lid (landfill) bin, except metal lids which can go in the yellow lid bin.
A separate purple bin for glass lets us recycle more types of glass, especially those types that are not covered by the Container Deposit Scheme.
It also stops broken glass from contaminating your yellow recycling bin, which means more paper, cardboard, and plastics can be recovered and turned into new products.
The purple bin will be collected every twelve weeks (quarterly)
Lids off!
Plastic lids should be placed in your general rubbish (red) bin as these get lost in the recycling process.
Metal lids should be placed in the recycling (yellow) bin
By sorting your glass into a separate bin, you are improving the quality of recyclables we collect in our community. Recycling well and reducing waste helps keep valuable resources out of landfill. This means they can be turned into new things like glass jars.
In line with State Government policy, the 4-bin waste service is now the standard service for households in our rural city. There isn’t an option to opt-out of having a glass recycling bin, just like you couldn't opt-out of having a mixed recycling or general rubbish bin in the past. You cannot opt-out of using the glass recycling service because glass is no longer accepted in the yellow-lidded mixed recycling bin.
Owners’ Corporations or Large Multi-Unit Buildings of more than 8 units can negotiate the number of glass bins they receive, at this stage each individual unit will be receiving a new Glass Bin.
We'll be providing more detailed information on how to use your purple glass bin closer to the service start date. If you require any further information, or if you are in a Large Multi-Unit Building and would like to negotiate the number of glass bins you receive, please contact Council via email Council@wangaratta.vic.gov.au or phone (03) 5722 0888.
You can drop off clean, lid-removed glass bottles and jars for free at any of the four Council transfer stations (Wangaratta, Markwood, Moyhu, and Eldorado) Locations, Fees and Charges Rural City of Wangaratta. You can also participate in the Container Deposit Scheme at refund points such as the Exchange Depot Wangaratta (Newman Street) or Wareena Park Wangaratta (Swan Street) Glass Drop-Off Facilities Rural City of Wangaratta.
