Will it cost me more to have a purple glass bin?

Residents will receive glass bins and collection services at no charge during the 25/26 financial year.

When will the glass bins be delivered?

Glass bins will start being delivered from July. If your property is included in the service, you’ll receive a letter during June with more information.

How big are the purple bins?

The purple bins have a capacity of 80L.

This bin is about 40% smaller than the smallest red bin available.

What goes in the purple lid bin?

  • Glass Jars (empty, clean): pasta sauce, jam, condiments, etc.
  • Glass Bottles (empty, clean): cordial, oil, wine, champagne, beer, spirit, etc.

What doesn't go in the purple lid bin?

  • Bottle and jar lids and corks NOT attached to the container
  • Drinking glassware and crystal glassware
  • Mirrors and windows
  • Glass bottles containing cigarette butts or lids
  • Broken crockery, bakeware or glass storage containers
  • Perfume bottles

All of these items must be placed in your red lid (landfill) bin, except metal lids which can go in the yellow lid bin.

Why do we need a glass recycling bin?

A separate purple bin for glass lets us recycle more types of glass, especially those types that are not covered by the Container Deposit Scheme.

It also stops broken glass from contaminating your yellow recycling bin, which means more paper, cardboard, and plastics can be recovered and turned into new products.

I don't have much glass recycling, do I need a bin?

In line with State Government policy, the 4-bin waste service is now the standard service for households in our rural city.
There isn’t an option to opt-out of having a glass recycling bin, just like you couldn't opt-out of having a mixed recycling or general rubbish bin in the past. You cannot opt-out of using the glass recycling service because glass is no longer accepted in the yellow-lidded mixed recycling bin.

Lids on or off?

Lids off!

Loose lids should be placed in your general rubbish bin as these get lost in the recycling process.

Why separate glass?

By sorting your glass into a separate bin, you are improving the quality of recyclables we collect in our community.
Recycling well and reducing waste helps keep valuable resources out of landfill. This means they can be turned into new things like glass jars.

How often will the bin be collected?

The purple bin will be collected every twelve weeks (quarterly)

I live in a unit, do I get a glass bin?

Owners’ Corporations or Large Multi-Unit Buildings of more than 8 units can negotiate the number of glass bins they receive, at this stage each individual unit will be receiving a new Glass Bin.

We'll be providing more detailed information on how to use your purple glass bin closer to the service start date. If you require any further information, or if you are in a Large Multi-Unit Building and would like to negotiate the number of glass bins you receive, please contact Council via email Council@wangaratta.vic.gov.au or phone (03) 5722 0888.

If you're a resident without a purple glass recycling bin, are you still required to keep your yellow bin glass free?
