Milawa Football Netball Club Lighting Upgrade

The Milawa Football Netball Club (MFNC) recently switched on new sports lighting at Milawa Recreation Reserve, marking the completion of a major community-led project that will support local sport and recreation well into the future.

Current lighting issues:

  • Installed over 20 years ago
  • Mounted on short, non-compliant poles
  • Costly to operate and near end-of-life
  • Output of 20Lux, below AFL’s 50Lux training standard

Lighting upgrade details:

  • Installation of 16 high-efficiency 1500W LED floodlights
  • Mounted on 4 x 30m poles
  • New lights deliver an average of 130Lux across the oval

  • Supports growing participation from various groups
  • Enhances suitability for evening community events
  • Improved light coverage allows more users simultaneously
  • 3-phase power upgrade enables solar panel use, reducing energy costs

Timeline:

  • Project commenced: September 2025
  • Project commissioning phase: June 2026
  • Project completed 9 months ahead of schedule: August 2026

Funding:

The $320,000 lighting upgrade was funded through The Country Football Netball Program administered by Sport and Recreation Victoria, with MFNC securing a grant of $240,660 (excluding GST) and leading delivery of the project. The Rural City of Wangaratta provided grant administration and project management support throughout the process.
