Project overview

The Rural City of Wangaratta is upgrading the pedestrian bridge at the Rowan Street underpass.

The project will replace the existing bridge with a wider, more accessible pedestrian crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.



What’s changing:

  • Existing bridge width: 2.5 metres
  • New bridge width: 3 metres
  • Bridge length: 17.25 metres
  • Bridge type: Super T-beam
  • Support structure: Concrete retaining walls at each end, forming the underpass walls below

Construction details:

Contractor: Heuron Screenline Pty Ltd

Current status:

  • The new bridge is being constructed off‑site.
  • Once complete, the existing bridge will be removed and replaced.

Design and funding:

Designed in accordance with AS5100‑2017 standards

Design load capacity: 5kPa

Funded by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC)

Purpose of the upgrade:

  • Increase bridge width
  • Improve accessibility for all users

Pedestrian and cyclist impacts:

The pedestrian bridge is expected to be closed for approximately one week during construction.

Alternative routes will be available via:

  • Templeton Street underpass pedestrian access
  • Norton/Cusack Street underpass pedestrian access

Traffic impacts

Rowan Street will remain open to through traffic for most of the works.

A full road closure (both directions) will be required during bridge lifting operations:

  • Duration: up to four hours

Traffic management and detours will be in place during this time.

  • Confirmed construction dates
  • Path and road closure details

Updates will be shared through Council’s official communication channels.
