Volunteering with the Rural City of Wangaratta is a rewarding way to support Council services, programs and facilities. Council volunteers contribute their skills and time across a range of areas, helping deliver important activities and enhance day‑to‑day operations.

Volunteer Opportunities

Gallery Volunteers

About the Gallery: Wangaratta Art Gallery presents a diverse program of national, state and regionally significant exhibitions, events, workshops and artist-led projects. Across three exhibition spaces, the program showcases the work of regional artists alongside work by national and internationally renowned artists and national touring exhibitions from across Australia.

About Volunteering: Volunteers provide an incredible service to Wangaratta Art Gallery. Volunteers engage with visitors, providing information and having conversations, they record essential visitor data, and assist with events and activities. Gallery volunteers get first-hand experience of our programs, exhibitions, events as well as meeting artists and cultural professionals. Becoming a volunteer provides wonderful opportunities to contribute to the cultural life and activities in Wangaratta. 

Time Commitment: Volunteer shifts are two hours (typically 2-4pm) on weekdays and weekends, with a minimum of one shift a month.

Visitor Information

About the Visitor Information Centre: The Visitor Services team provides local information to visitors at our Wangaratta and Glenrowan locations, sharing a wealth of local knowledge about our region.

About Volunteering: Being a Local Ambassador is a rewarding way to support our region and create memorable experiences for visitors. Our volunteers share their local knowledge, offer a warm welcome and play an important role in showcasing the best of Wangaratta. There are also opportunities for assisting at expos and events where we host pop-up information stands throughout the year.

Time Commitment: Volunteer shifts are three hours on weekdays and weekends, with a minimum of one shift a month

 

 

 

Friends of Grit & Resilience

About the Program: The Grit and Resilience Program (Social Inclusion Action Groups – SIAG) is a Victorian State Government–funded initiative delivered by the Rural City of Wangaratta. The program focuses on strengthening community connections and supporting pathways to inclusion across Wangaratta. By working alongside the community, it aims to create long‑term, sustainable outcomes that support positive mental health and wellbeing for everyone.

About Volunteering: The Friends of Grit and Resilience is a volunteer group that supports the Grit and Resilience Program by helping bring community events and activities to life. Working alongside the Consortium, the Friends play a key role in promoting events, welcoming participants, supporting event delivery and assisting with engagement and feedback activities. The Friends help build connections, encourage participation and support pathways for social inclusion across the Wangaratta community.

Time Commitment: Flexible and varied, depending on events, programs, and volunteer availability. 

Amplify - (12-25 year-olds)

About Amplify:  The Amplify program delivers youth-led music & cultural events that are drug, alcohol, smoke and vape free.

About Volunteering: Amplify Crew contribute ideas for youth‑led music events, workshops, and programs, help plan event themes, activities, and event run sheets, and assist with brainstorming ways to engage young people and local artists. Volunteering with the Rural City of Wangaratta Amplify crew gives young people the chance to grow, connect, and make a real impact in the local music and arts community.

Time Commitment: Flexible and varied, depending on events, programs, and volunteer availability.

Volunteers at the Rural City of Wangaratta will need to:

  • complete an application,
  • have referees,
  • provide proof of a Working with Children Check, and 
  • complete a National Police Check

Volunteers will also need to agree to the Volunteer Code of Conduct, and may be required to complete additional training such as Child Safe Training, and venue inductions.
