Cool off with free swimming
Free swimming at Wangaratta’s pools next week will help families escape the pre-Christmas heat.
With improvements to the Mitchell Avenue Splash Park not yet complete and hot weather predicted, it is vital the community have a free place to cool down.
Council and the YMCA have agreed to open the Olympic Pool for free from Monday 16 December to Friday 20 December inclusive. The hours will be from 4pm – 8.30pm.
The aquatic facilities at the Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre (WISAC) will be free from Tuesday 17 December to Friday 20 December inclusive but only between the hours of 1pm and 9pm.
The temperature is forecast to reach 35 degrees on Monday, 39 on Tuesday and 41 on Wednesday.
Council’s Manager Community and Recreation Ben Thomas said the move was designed to help people stay cool during the hot weather.
“We acknowledge the splash park was due to open earlier this summer and that the community need somewhere to cool off,” he said.
The splash park is undergoing a number of improvements, including the installation of a perimeter fence, enclosed tube slide, more shade, more seating and other safety features.
It was due to re-open in early December but is now expected to open on 21 December, with shade and seating to be installed later in summer.
