The low-cost desexing program initiated by the Rural City of Wangaratta has seen remarkable uptake, with more than 80 participants currently enrolled. The program's effectiveness underscores the collaborative efforts of the Council and our community in improving the welfare of companion animals within our municipality.

Whilst many dogs are registered for the program, the Rural City of Wangaratta would like to encourage more cat owners to join the initiative, given the large number of unwanted litters that have occurred in the past few months. Enrolment operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so residents who qualify are encouraged to apply promptly to avoid missing out. Those needing further assistance are encouraged to speak with the Compliance and Customer Service teams.

The program addresses the issue of pet overpopulation and promotes responsible pet ownership by including complimentary microchipping for all participating animals and where needed, registration. By offering these services together, the scheme not only reduces the financial burden on pet owners but also ensures that pets can be properly identified and traceable should they be found outside the home.

“Our community has really embraced this program, and I'm delighted that we can offer this affordable option, enabling many to access the desexing procedure for their cats and dogs." said Dean Rees, Mayor Rural City of Wangaratta

The Companion Animal Desexing & Microchipping Program is made possible through the Victoria State Government’s Animal Welfare Fund Grants Program and is available to those in our community who hold a pension, concession, health care or low-income card.

Eligible pet owners who wish to take part need to visit Council’s Customer Service counter to sign up for the program and pay their contribution: $60 for cats and $150 for dogs. They will be issued a voucher, to be presented when booking the procedure at one of our four participating vet clinics.

For those with mobility issues who cannot attend the Customer Service counter in person please call 03 5722 0888 to discuss your options.

For full terms and conditions and instructions on how to participate in the program please visit the Rural City of Wangaratta website.
