Storm and flood

Storms and floods are common occurrences in the region so it is important that you know how to protect your property.

Protect your home or property against storms

To prepare your home for a storm, make sure your gutters, spouting and downpipes are well maintained and clear of debris.  Trim and remove branches that overhang or are near your home. Keep your yard and surrounds clear of rubbish and clutter. You can find further advice on how the make your home storm safe on the SES website.

Protect your home or property against flooding

To prepare for flood, you must first make sure you are aware of whether or not your home, farm or business is vulnerable to flooding. You can find this out via the Planning Schemes Online. If it is, then you should prepare an Emergency Plan. You can find further advice on how to develop a Plan on the SES website

Wangaratta Local Flooding Guide

There are four main waterways which can cause flooding in Wangaratta. They are:

  • Ovens River
  • King River
  • One Mile Creek (part of the Fifteen Mile Creek System)
  • Three Mile Creek (part of the Fifteen Mile Creek System)

Flooding in the Fifteen Mile, One Mile and/or Three Mile Creeks can happen separately to flooding in the Ovens and/or King Rivers.  This means different parts of Wangaratta can be at risk depending on where floodwater is coming from.

Please refer to the SES Wangaratta Local Flood Guide.
