As schools approach the end of term one the Rural City of Wangaratta would like to remind motorists that School Speed Zone limits are still in effect. These reduced speed limits are crucial in ensuring the safety of our children as they travel to and from school. They also safeguard the School Crossing Supervisors that manage the crossings.

Studies have shown that a reduction in speed can significantly increase the chances of a child surviving if hit by a car. Therefore, speed limits in school zones are lowered to 40 km/h during peak times when students are commuting. We urge all drivers to slow down and remain vigilant for children crossing the road or near school buses. Failure to adhere to the school zone speed limit may result in fines.

In recent weeks, Council has received several reports of near misses, highlighting the importance of obeying these speed limits. We implore our community to prioritise safety by reducing speed and paying attention when driving within these zones, not only for the protection of our students but also for the safety of our School Crossing Supervisors.

“We must remember that the safety of our children is paramount. By slowing down in school zones, we're not just obeying the law, we're actively protecting the lives of our community's most vulnerable members." Said Dean Rees, Mayor of the Rural City of Wangaratta.
