The Rural City of Wangaratta is delighted to announce a significant milestone in the realisation of its vision for an innovative social housing project on the former school site at 64 Greta Road in Wangaratta. The Victorian Government announced today that it will provide financial support and remove a land title restriction to enable the redevelopment of the Council-owned site to occur.

Over the past seven months, Council has forged a close partnership with the preferred developer Nestd Development Social Enterprise, together they have shaped a vision for the site. The redevelopment aims to provide a mix of social, affordable, and key worker, apartment style living. The centrally located development will be complemented by essential amenities such childcare services, a café, and community area, and will feature sustainable design features.

Today’s announcement is in line with The Victorian Government’s plan to deliver hundreds of affordable new homes in the state’s North East as part of Victoria’s Housing Statement. The decision to lift the restriction unlocks the potential for all aspects of the project and brings it one step closer to reality.

“Council thanks the Victorian Government for their commitment to delivering housing in the North East and this assistance will see the project moving forward.”

Said, Brendan McGrath, Chief Executive Officer Rural City of Wangaratta

“Our collaboration with Nestd Development Social Enterprise underscores a shared commitment to community-centric development, environmental stewardship, and exemplary urban design principles. As we progress, Council remains dedicated to working with Nestd Development Social Enterprise to guide this transformative development forward.” He continued.

Anticipated to address the pressing need for apartment-style housing in Wangaratta, the project will offer a range of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units. Additionally, the construction is expected to generate employment opportunities for local trades, thereby stimulating economic growth within the region.

While the announcement marks a significant step forward, there is still work to be done. The next phases involve finalising proposals and contracts, submitting the project for planning approval, and engaging in comprehensive community consultations. The Rural City of Wangaratta recognises the importance of community input in shaping a project that reflects the needs and aspirations of Wangaratta residents. Together with Nestd Development Social Enterprise and our community partners, Council is excited to embark on this journey toward a more vibrant and inclusive Wangaratta.
