As a part of our Rural Placemaking program, Council consulted with Whitfield residents in 2020 about what they wanted to see in their township plan. Priorities included footpaths, better drainage, and an improved Wangaratta-Whitfield Rd/Mansfield-Whitfield Road intersection.

Council had previously sought external funding to help implement the full scope these works, however had unfortunately been unsuccessful until now. A positive partnership with Tourism North East on the Prosecco Road Project, and VIC Roads emerged, enabling the Rural City of Wangaratta to deliver extensive improvement to the Whitfield Streetscape. These works will include a shared pathway, parking, landscaping, drainage and kerb upgrades, as well as an intersection upgrade.

A series of targeted Community Consultation sessions were arranged, including two live sessions attended by members of the community and Council Officers in Whitfield on Thursday 16 September and Friday 17 September. The purpose of these sessions was to meet with local residents so they could review and provide feedback on the proposed works.

After receiving feedback from more than 35 local community members across three sessions, the Infrastructure Team are revising their designs. These revisions will be brought back to the community for further consultation in late October before going out to tender.

“We are excited to see the Rural Placemaking plans we made in Whitfield more than 12 months ago getting the go ahead. It’s a great win for the community and local businesses, and proof that partnerships work.” – Marcus Goonan, Director Infrastructure.
