Wangaratta Expands Kerbside Recycling Services to Include Glass
Published on 29 May 2025
Rural City of Wangaratta Council endorsed the expansion of kerbside recycling services to include separate glass collection, at Tuesday’s council meeting.
While the expanded Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service was paused until the State Government finalises the Service Standards.
From July 2025, properties across Wangaratta and surrounding townships will begin receiving their new purple lidded bins, with the quarterly service expected to be up and running in September. This initiative aligns with the Victorian Government’s Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021, which mandates all councils to provide these services by 2027.
Residents will receive glass bins and collection services at no charge during the 25/26 financial year, with the expansion supporting state-wide targets to divert 80% of waste from landfill by 2030.
Mayor Irene Grant said the expansion reflects Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community wellbeing: “This is a significant milestone for our community. By diverting more waste from landfill and improving recycling outcomes, we’re not only protecting our environment but also delivering smarter, more cost-effective services for residents.”
Council has already engaged over 600 residents and students through education programs and will roll out a comprehensive communication and education plan to ensure a smooth transition. This includes information packs, social media updates, and local newspaper ads.
Director of Community & Infrastructure Marcus Goonan emphasised the importance of community participation: “The success of this program depends on residents using the new bins correctly. Our education campaign will help ensure everyone knows what goes where.”
