National Sorry Day Workshop in Wangaratta
Published on 19 May 2025
On this National Sorry Day, the Rural City of Wangaratta is partnering with local Traditional Owners Anita Morgan (nee Cooper) and Kevin Cooper to deliver a cultural inclusion workshop. The event will take place on Monday 26 May, Sydney Beach at 10:30 am, featuring a smoking ceremony, traditional storytelling, and damper making.
This workshop aims to deepen community understanding of Aboriginal history and the profound significance of Sorry Day. Anita and Kevin will share stories of the Stolen Generations. Their narratives, shared on this significant day, are crucial for truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation.
These personal accounts will offer a raw glimpse into history's impact on our community today, honouring the resilience of those forcibly separated from their families. With these stories, Anita and Kevin intend to educate and foster empathy, ensuring that the lasting effects of past policies are understood and never repeated.
By listening and acknowledging these stories, community demonstrate respect, promote mutual understanding, and contribute to a shared journey of healing. The profound impact of Sorry Day serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to reconciliation.
“All are welcome to take part in this workshop led by Elder Uncle Wally’s children Anita and Kevin who are proudly carrying his teachings of reconciliation into the future. It is a good opportunity to enhance the understanding of our history.” Irene Grant, Mayor Rural City of Wangaratta.
