A heatwave is a period of excessively hot and uncomfortable weather that can negatively affect our human health or when temperatures rise much higher than usual for several days in a row. Whilst hot weather may seem normal in Australia, it is important that you understand how to keep your family safe during a heatwave.
What to do in a heatwave
There are some simple steps you can take to keep cool during a heatwave:
If you think you or a family member is experiencing the impact of hot weather, please see your doctor or call Nurse-on-call on 300 60 60 24. This is a 24/7 phone service that provides immediate, expert health advice from a registered nurse.
Remember, never leave children or pets in cars
Children or pets that are left unattended in parked cars for even a few minutes are at risk of serious heat-related illnesses and possibly death. It is an offence to leave children in cars. Penalties include heavy fines and jail.
