A section of Sandford Road will be temporarily closed to allow for a major upgrade of the vital link to be completed safely.

The road is being upgraded to improve drainage, widen the road, install kerb and channel and provide a new smoother surface.

Upgrade works began last week with a partial road closure in place, however the site had to shut down due to a number of near misses.

Vehicles were driving around temporary barriers and road closed signs, putting themselves, other motorists and contractors at risk.

Following consultation with Worksafe and contractors, Council has decided the only way to complete the job safely is to temporarily close Sandford Road from Tone Road to Prestige Lane. The road closure will begin on Tuesday, 6 April 2021 is scheduled to be completed by 31st July.

Rather than using Sandford Road, a detour will be in place directing vehicles to use Tone Road and Sisely Avenue to complete their journeys.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Marcus Goonan said closing the road was a last resort.

“We understand this road closure is going to add 5-10 minutes to some journeys to and from the Gibson Street industrial area,” he said.

“Safety is our number one priority at all work sites and temporarily closing this road is the only way this vital job can be completed safely.

“When the work is completed Sandford Road will be less susceptible to flooding and will be a much better road for heavy vehicles.”
