Pet Registration Door Knocking

A pet registration door-knock is about to begin to identify addresses where unregistered animals live.

It is a requirement of the Domestic Animals Act 1994 that all dogs and cats over the age of three months be registered with the local council and renewed by April 10 each year.

From 28 June 2021, council officers will be going from house to house, checking animal registrations and details. This will be an ongoing initiative to identify as many unregistered animals as possible.

Council officers respond to hundreds of calls each year about wandering dogs and cats, as well as barking dog and other nuisance pet complaints. These calls reveal that many pet owners are failing to register their pets with council and, as a result, a substantial number of infringements are issued to these owners.

We encourage responsible pet owners to register their animals at the earliest opportunity to avoid a $330 infringement for each unregistered dog or cat.

Animal registration fees help us provide animal related services, including education on responsible pet ownership, and enable council officers to quickly and safely return your pet to you if they go missing or get out.
