It’s time to nominate those who make a difference in our community.

Nominations are open for the Rural City of Wangaratta’s Australia Day Awards 2022. Anyone can nominate a citizen, young citizen or community event or project that has inspired them by 5pm Friday 5 November 2021.

Mayor Dean Rees said the Australia Day Awards are one of the highest honours a Council can bestow to publicly acknowledge local heroes, whose dedication and contributions may otherwise go unnoticed.

“There are so many people and organisations in our community that go above and beyond to make the Rural City of Wangaratta special. This is your chance to thank them and acknowledge their inspirational work,” said Mayor Rees.

“If you know an outstanding volunteer, community group, teacher, scientist, doctor, anyone who inspires you, take a minute to nominate them for the 2022 Australia Day Awards.”

Nominations are now open for awards in the following categories:

  • Citizen of the Year

  • Young Citizen of the Year (under 25)

  • Community Event or Project of the Year

Recipients will be presented with their awards at the 2022 Australia Day celebrations held across the municipality. Nominations close at 5pm on Friday 5 November 2021.

In addition to receiving an award on Australia Day, the Citizen of the Year is invited to be part of the Marmungun Rock Ceremony during Reconciliation Week in 2022, hosted by the Dirrawarra Indigenous Network.

“This is a very unique and special opportunity for the Citizen of the Year and Council is extremely honored to be part of the event.” said Mayor Rees.

Volunteer firefighter Graham Colson was awarded the Citizen of the Year 2021 for his lifetime dedication to volunteer firefighting and his active role in the Warby Ranges Landcare Group.

Nineteen-year-old robotics fanatic Lachlan Carboon was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year for his role as a volunteer firefighter and for his outstanding achievements in robotics and science.

Wangaratta Farmers’ Market was recognised as the Community Event of the Year in 2021. The volunteer group was celebrated for quickly adapting through the Covid restrictions to continue to support our many producers in our region to continue to sell their products online.

Nominations are closed.
