The global gaming phenomenon Esports is coming to town when the Wangaratta Library hosts the Australian Esports League Wangaratta Cup in April.

Rural City of Wangaratta is pleased to announce that leading esports provider Australian Esports League (AEL) will be hosting an Esports tournament on 30 April.

The 2022 Australian Esports League Wangaratta Cup will offer gamers the chance to compete and win prizes across some exciting esports games.

The event will feature two of the most popular esports games – Super Smash Bros. and Rocket League. The two games selected for this event cater for all levels of players and are both family friendly.

Selected matches will be streamed with live commentary for global audiences to view.

Rural City of Wangaratta Manager Arts Culture and Events Simone Nolan said participants could look forward to a fantastic opportunity to take part in the global Esports phenomenon here in Wangaratta as part of the Australian Esports League Wangaratta Cup.

“This initiative is supported by our Tourism and Major Events unit and the Wangaratta Youth Council, who are excited to provide an online platform for young people to safely stay connected,” she said.

“This event is an incredible opportunity for young people in Wangaratta to show their gaming skills and spend time with their friends. Esports is a growing industry and it is important that young people in Wangaratta have the opportunities to grow their skills and participate in a field that has so much potential.”

This event is running as part of “FReeZA”, a Victorian Government initiative that supports young Victorians to get involved in their community by planning and running drug, smoke and alcohol-free music and cultural events for other young people.

“We are extremely excited to be partnering with Rural City of Wangaratta to deliver this event. It is so important for people within the community to be able to connect, especially now, and esports is the ideal platform to help facilitate these connections”, Darren Kwan, CEO of Australian Esports League said.

"Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. are two games that are fun no matter the skill level and I hope all young people sign up for the chance to compete.”
