At the December Council meeting, CR Allison Winters reported on the 2026 Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards

"I would like to acknowledge the recent success of the Wangaratta Art Gallery at the 2026 Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards, where the Gallery received Small Project of the Year for the exhibition Overland by Wangaratta born artist Matthew Harris.

This recognition is a significant achievement for our region, particularly given the highly competitive field of finalists, which included some of Victoria’s largest cultural institutions, including the State Library of Victoria. The award recognised not only the artistic quality of the exhibition, but also its thoughtful and community focused approach. The judging panel highlighted the exhibition’s exploration of local history, its accessible programming for children and young people, and its contribution to broader community engagement and reflection.

This recognition demonstrates the important role arts and cultural spaces play within regional communities like Wangaratta. Facilities like the Wangaratta Art Gallery contribute strongly to the liveability, creativity and vibrancy of our municipality. They provide opportunities for learning, storytelling, tourism, connection, and economic activity, while also creating space for important conversations and local voices to be heard. Importantly, this achievement aligns closely with the aspirations outlined within our Council Plan around supporting a connected, inclusive and thriving community, celebrating our local identity, and fostering opportunities for arts, culture and community participation across the municipality.

I would like to congratulate Gallery Director Rachel Arndt, the Gallery staff, volunteers, supporters and artist Matthew Harris on this outstanding recognition. It is wonderful to see work created and delivered in Wangaratta being recognised at a statewide level, and I think it is something our whole community can be proud of."
