Wangaratta Library has launched its first Story Walk along Docker Street, featuring the children’s classic Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. Families can follow the story page by page along the walking route.

The Story Walk launch coincides with the stage production of Where is the Green Sheep? at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre from the 25 to 26 May, offering families another way to enjoy the popular story and support early literacy development.

A Story Walk combines reading and gentle physical activity by placing a picture book page by page along a public path. Participants follow the story at their own pace, stopping to read each page before moving on to the next.

The Docker Street installation is designed to be simple and accessible, with durable, weather‑resistant displays positioned among existing garden beds. The Story Walk is located near the Library, Gallery, and Performing Arts Centre, supporting a shared focus on learning, culture, and activity in Wangaratta’s city centre.

Wangaratta Library staff say the Story Walk is intended to encourage early literacy while making use of familiar public spaces.

“Story Walks provide an easy way for children to experience books outside the library, while also encouraging families to spend time reading and walking together,” Loueen Twyford Wangaratta Library Coordinator said.

Following the initial installation, Wangaratta Library will review opportunities to feature additional stories and, subject to future funding, explore more permanent display options.
