If you’re thinking about buying an existing food business or starting your own, you will need to comply with current food laws. You will also need to register your business with us.
There are four different types of food businesses, which are categorised by risk:
- Class 1 - Serving food to customers at higher risk e.g nursing homes, hospitals and child care centres.
- Class 2 - Manufacturing or handling of unpackaged, food which requires temperature control e.g restaurant, cafe
- Class 3 - Handling low risk food or wholesale of pre-packaged food, or selling pre-packaged, potentially hazardous food e.g bakery, home based food business such as cake making.
- Class 4 - Selling only shelf-stable, pre-packaged food e.g newsagent, bottleshop
