NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held right here in the Rural City of Wangaratta.

‘The Last Daughter’ Film Screening

Thursday July 13 | 6pm | GOTAFE auditorium

Brenda’s first memories were of growing up in a loving white foster family, before she was suddenly taken away and returned to her Aboriginal family.

Decades later, she feels disconnected from both halves of her life. But the traumas of her past do not lie quietly buried. So, she goes searching for the foster family with whom she had lost all contact.

Along the way she uncovers long-buried secrets, government lies, and the possibility for deeper connections to family and culture.

The Last Daughter is a documentary about Brenda’s mission to unearth the truth about her past, and to reconcile the two sides of her family.

Doors open at 6.00pm and the movie starts at 6.30pm.
