The Rural City of Wangaratta will soon deliver significant safety upgrades for pedestrians at four key locations in the CBD. The project is made possible through the Victorian Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program, with the Victorian Government investing $23 million to improve safety and accessibility in busy pedestrian areas.

O’LEX Civil Construction has been engaged to install three new raised pedestrian crossings in the CBD. These crossings will be built to current standards and are designed to accommodate all vehicles, including buses and trucks.

Cr. Harvey Benton, Acting Mayor: “We understand these works will create some temporary inconvenience, and we thank our community for their patience as we deliver these important improvements. We are committed to creating a city centre that is safe and accessible.”

The improvements will be delivered at the following locations:

  • Ford Street (Ovens Street end): New wombat crossing at the Ovens Street roundabout, replacing the existing zebra crossing.
  • Ford Street (Murphy Street end): Upgrade of the zebra crossing about 40m north of the Murphy Street roundabout.
  • Faithfull Street: New wombat crossing mid-block near Victoria Parade.
  • Reid Street: A new pedestrian-operated traffic signal will be installed mid-block between Ovens and Murphy Streets (currently out to tender—more information will be provided soon).

During construction, there will be temporary road closures, footpath diversions, and some reduced or restricted parking. Detours will be clearly signed. While through traffic will be diverted, local access—including for customers—will be maintained wherever possible. Council will work closely with contractors to minimise inconvenience and keep the community informed throughout the project.

The construction timeline is as follows:

  • 27 October – 10 November: Ford Street (Murphy Street end)
  • 11 November – 26 November: Faithfull Street
  • 27 November – 10 December: Ford Street (Ovens Street end)

Variable Message Signs will be in place from 16 October on Ford Street and 27 October on Faithfull Street to provide advance notice of the changes.

These improvements aim to make the CBD safer and more accessible for everyone who lives, works, and visits Wangaratta. Council thanks the community for its support and cooperation during these works.
