Published on 21 October 2025
Council’s draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2025-2029 (DAMP) outlines services, programs and policies relating to animal management, responsible pet ownership, relevant Local Laws, and community education.
Harvey Benton, Acting Mayor Rural City of Wangaratta “Responsible pet ownership impacts everyone, whether or not you have a pet yourself.”
“The way we manage domestic animals plays a key role in maintaining a safe and healthy community.”
Every four years Councils are required by legislation to review their Domestic Animal Management Plan. The draft DAMP includes up-to-date statistics, objectives and actions over the next four years, and has clarifications on relevant new and existing legislation relating to domestic animals.
The DAMP offers a clear framework for managing domestic animals, balancing the needs of pet owners, the wider community, and the environment. The plan sets out Council’s commitment to its animal management responsibilities, as well as supporting the community with education and awareness programs.
