Bush Nippers is returning to the Sydney Beaches this January. Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre (WSAC) are offering local families a chance to take part in a program that’s helping kids across Victoria build confidence and learn how to stay safe around water.

Designed for primary school-aged children, Bush Nippers offers a hands-on, practical approach to water safety. Based on the popular coastal Nippers model, it’s adapted for inland communities where kids learn in pools, rivers, lakes, and other open-water environments.

The program will run from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 January 2026, with two sessions each day 9am–11am and 11:30am–1:30pm

Each session runs for two hours and is open to all abilities. Activities are age-appropriate and focus on building skills like safe swimming, rescue techniques, CPR and understanding local water conditions. It’s a great way for kids to learn how to look after themselves and others when they’re around the water.

Bush Nippers is delivered by Life Saving Victoria in partnership with local councils and aquatic centres. It’s part of a statewide effort to make water safety education accessible for families who live inland and may not have regular access to the beach.

The program also celebrates the deep connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with land and water. Through the My Community module, children explore how waterways have sustained culture and community for thousands of years and reflect on their own relationship with local rivers and lakes.

Bush Nippers runs on Bpangerang Country, where the Ovens (Torryong) and King (Poodumbia) Rivers have long held cultural significance.

Leon Newton
, Manager of the Sports, Aquatic and Events precinct, said the program’s return reflects strong community interest:

“We’re proud to bring Bush Nippers back to Wangaratta for a third year. The program continues to grow, and it’s clear that families value the chance for their kids to learn these skills in a fun and relaxed setting. It’s about building confidence, awareness, and a lifelong respect for water.”

“Feedback from previous years has been overwhelmingly positive, with parents saying their children leave more confident and better prepared to stay safe around water. It’s a program that’s practical, inclusive and fun, and it’s helping build a stronger culture of water safety in regional areas.”
