Inspiring future changemakers

In September, our Environment & Sustainability team had the pleasure of attending the 2025 Local Government Careers Day, hosted at Galen College in Wangaratta. The event brought together students from all local high schools, offering them a unique opportunity to explore the diverse career pathways available within local government.
Our team was proud to represent the environment and sustainability arm of Council, setting up an interactive display and engaging in meaningful conversations with curious and enthusiastic students. Throughout the day, we were asked a wide range of thoughtful questions about our roles, what we do, how we got here, and the different study and career pathways that led us into the sustainability space. We even won an award for best display on the day!
It was particularly rewarding to hear students share their own experiences with some of the programs and events our team runs. From tree planting days to clean-up events and sustainability workshops, it was clear that many young people in our community are already actively involved in caring for the environment.
Some students were surprised to learn that our team manages many of the natural spaces they enjoy regularly, especially areas along the Ovens River, as well as local creeks and rail trails. These moments of connection helped highlight the real-world impact of our work and the importance of environmental stewardship at the local level.
Events like these are a fantastic way to spark interest in environment and sustainability careers and to show the next generation that meaningful, impactful work can happen right here in their own community.
