The Rural City of Wangaratta is committed to the safety of our community, road users, and animals. Livestock that are not properly contained can pose serious risks to public safety and property.

If you see livestock wandering on public roads or land, please report it immediately to Council on (03) 5722 0888.

This number is monitored 24/7, including after hours.

 

What is Considered Livestock?

Under the Impounding of Livestock Act 1994, livestock includes animals such as:

  • Cattle
  • Horses
  • Sheep
  • Goats
  • Pigs
  • Alpacas
  • Poultry and other birds used in primary production

Dogs and cats are not considered livestock under this Act.

 

Owner Responsibilities

Livestock owners are responsible for:

  • Ensuring fencing is secure and well-maintained
  • Preventing animals from escaping onto roads or neighbouring properties
  • Responding promptly if notified of wandering stock

Failure to comply may result in:

  • Impoundment of livestock
  • Infringement notices
  • Recovery of costs associated with impoundment and care

 

Reclaiming Impounded Livestock

To reclaim impounded livestock, owners must:

  1. Provide proof of ownership
  2. Pay any applicable impoundment and care fees
  3. Ensure fencing or containment issues are resolved

Unclaimed livestock may be sold or otherwise disposed of in accordance with the Impounding of Livestock Act 1994.
