Rising costs remain top challenge for Wangaratta businesses

Rising operating costs continue to place significant pressure on businesses across the Rural City of Wangaratta, according to Council's 2026 Business and Industry Survey.

Almost 90 per cent of businesses surveyed reported increased costs over the past 12 months, making cost pressures the most significant issue affecting local businesses. Businesses also identified planning and development processes, access to industrial and commercial land, workforce shortages, and infrastructure as key challenges to growth.

Mayor Cr Irene Grant said the survey provides valuable insight into the needs and priorities of the local business community.

"The survey gives businesses an opportunity to share the challenges they are facing and identify where Council can provide support."

"While rising costs remain a major concern, businesses have also told us they want Council to continue advocating on issues that support business growth and investment across the municipality."

Businesses also highlighted the importance of direct engagement with Council and practical assistance when navigating approvals, permits and regulatory requirements.

The survey findings will help inform Council's business support and advocacy priorities over the coming year. Planned initiatives include ongoing business visits, strengthening the Business Concierge service as a central point of contact, and advocacy on issues such as workforce attraction, investment-ready land and infrastructure delivery.

More than three-quarters of respondents also expressed interest in attending informal business networking events. Businesses identified grant opportunities, business continuity planning and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as priority areas for future support and information.

"The feedback will help ensure Council's support and advocacy activities remain focused on the issues that matter most to local businesses," Cr Grant said.

The Business and Industry Survey is a key action under Council's Economic Development and Tourism Strategy 2024-2029 and will be conducted annually to track business sentiment, identify emerging issues and inform future planning.

Council's Business Concierge service provides a single point of contact for businesses seeking guidance, connections, and support to start, grow or invest in the region.
