Some restrictions apply to the erection and display of election signs within the Rural City of Wangaratta of which election candidates and property owners should be aware.

Election signs are not permitted on Council land, including roads or streets which are under Council control. This prohibition also applies to signs and banners attached to a verandah or awning which may overhang Council land, or any vehicles which are left on Council land for the primary purpose of displaying an election advertisement on the vehicle.

An election sign can be displayed on private land without a planning permit, if it meets the following criteria:

  • the advertising area of the sign does not exceed five square metres;
  • only one sign may be displayed on each separate property;
  • signs must not be animated or internally illuminated; and
  • signs must not be displayed longer than 14 days after the election or for a period not exceeding 3 months, whichever is sooner.

Multiple signs for different election candidates on a single private property are not permitted.

Candidates are responsible for any non-complying election signs which may be erected on their behalf.  Council may remove non-complying signs and retain for collection.  Property owners may incur financial penalties under the provisions of the Wangaratta Planning Scheme or Local Laws in relation to non-compliant signs.

Election signs must include the name and address of the person who authorised the electoral material. The address can be a street address or a PO Box address, but cannot be an email address. This applies to electoral material displayed on public or private land.

For further information about election signs or permits generally please contact Council on 5722 0888.
