Pedestrian Safety in Wangaratta's CBD

Council is encouraging community members to get involved in a conversation about improving pedestrian safety in Wangaratta’s CBD.

This includes introducing a 40km/h area across the CBD and establishing four new pedestrian priority crossings.

Council has developed concept designs for an initial four pedestrian priority crossing locations;

  • Reid Street, at Victoria Parade
  • Ovens Street, at Woolworths
  • Ford Street, at the Performing Arts and Convention Centre
  • Ford Street, at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral

Designs for the pedestrian priority crossings, and the parts of the CBD being considered for the introduction of a 40km/h area can be viewed below.

In addition, a pop-up session where members of the community will be able to speak with Council officers will be held in Molony’s Arcade on Friday, 8 February from 3pm – 5pm.

Cycling and Walking Strategy

The Rural City of Wangaratta are preparing a Walking and Cycling Strategy with the aim to increase the number of people walking and cycling in the Rural City of Wangaratta.

The strategy will identify the following:

  • Ways to make walking and cycling easier and more accessible and more enjoyable for more people.
  • Priority improvements to the quality, safety and continuous nature of facilities to better connect people to where they want to go.
  • What can be done to create a culture of cycling and walking in Wangaratta planning and management functions.
  • How to encourage more people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to ride and walk for longer and more often.

Draft Nature Strip Landscaping Policy

The Rural City of Wangaratta occasionally receives requests from residents and businesses for permission to landscape the nature strip or footpath adjacent to their house or business. More frequently complaints are received from other parties about plantings or other landscaping works that have been undertaken without permission. These unapproved works can cause problems with drainage, sight distances for road users and the safety of pedestrians.

The Rural City of Wangaratta encourages property owners and occupiers to recognise the value of nature strips and to take pride in maintaining them.

Therefore, Council intends to introduce a Nature Strip Landscaping Policy to ensure that if nature strips are modified, they are landscaped and maintained in a way that:

  • Minimises risk to the community;
  • Provides for the unobstructed and safe flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic;
  • Provides access for deliveries and utility service providers;
  • Allows kerbside parking of vehicles and door opening space;
  • Compliments the existing streetscape;
  • Complies with any planning overlay;

Council is seeking feedback on the Draft Nature Strip Landscaping Policy and associated guidelines which are available to view on Council’s website at or in hardcopy at the Wangaratta Government Centre, Cnr Ford and Ovens Streets, Wangaratta.

Submissions will be received until close of business on Friday 1 March 2019.
