Australia Day 2020
Community heroes and quiet achievers have been recognised with awards on Australia Day.
Dr Warren Garrett has been named the Rural City of Wangaratta Citizen of the Year on Australia Day. Also receiving awards were Young Citizen of the Year Hayden Sampson and Community Event of the Year: 40th Oxley Bush Market.
Citizen of the Year - Dr Warren Garrett
Dr Garrett has had many roles in our community from District Inspector of Schools to Chief Commissioner. He played an integral part in shaping the rural city into what it is today, including the building of many schools, the shire offices and our current and highly fought for logo.
In recent years he is respected for his tireless contribution to both the Probus Club of Wangaratta and Wangaratta RSL.
Young Citizen of the Year: Hayden Sampson
Hayden is a 16 year old from Wangaratta who has been an advocate for education and awareness about testicular cancer.
Together with a group of mates Hayden raised $23k towards testicular cancer awareness. He is now an ambassador for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre.
Community Event of the Year: 40th Oxley Bush Market
The historic Oxley Shire Hall and it’s grounds were a sea of red as the Annual Oxley Bush Market celebrated its 40th Ruby Anniversary on 2 November last year. A number of the 175 stall holders had participated for over 30 years while 45 were first timers.
