Applying for Australian Citizenship is an exciting time and Wangaratta is proud to play an important role in officiating and welcoming new citizens to the Australian community.
To apply for Australian Citizenship, you need to contact the Department of Home Affairs on 131 880 or visit their website https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/
The citizenship ceremony is the final step to being granted Australian citizenship.
Once your application has been approved by the Department of Home Affairs you will receive a letter inviting you to a ceremony with the date, location, time and requirements.
You should arrive about 30 minutes before the ceremony, so you can register and find your seat. The ceremony itself takes around 30 minutes.
After you are seated, there will be a formal introduction and speech by the Mayor. Following the Mayor’s speech, you will be asked you to stand before the gallery and repeat the Australian citizenship pledge out loud. You will become an Australian citizen after you make the pledge (You will say the version of pledge that you chose on your application).
You will then receive a small gift along with your citizenship certificate.
Your family and friends are welcome to take photographs of you during and after the ceremony.
Citizenship ceremonies will be held at the Wangaratta Government Centre, 62-68 Ovens Street, Wangaratta on the following dates (subject to change at Council's discretion):
Saturday 26 January 2019 (Australia Day)
Tuesday 12 March 2019
Monday 20 May 2019
Tuesday 17 September 2019
Monday 25 November 2019
Registration for each ceremony is from 5.30pm. If you have any questions about the ceremony, please contact Council's Executive Services Coordinator on 03 5722 0888.
