King Valley Gravel

King Valley will be home to a network of hundreds of kilometres of gravel cycling trails.

And to launch the trails the Rural City of Wangaratta will run a two day event in May 2021. “King GRAValley” on 2 May will be aimed at experienced riders, while a family day on 1 May will be targeted at locals looking to try the growing sport and come together.

Gravel road riding has grown rapidly in popularity and the King Valley is already known as one of the premiere destinations.

The King Valley was impacted by both bushfires in January 2020 and Covid-19 throughout the rest of the year, devastating the local tourism industry.

The King Valley Gravel project will see 11 trails marked with signage and digitally mapped from Moyhu to the Upper King Valley. In total some 610km of trails will be mapped and signed, with courses ranging from 20km – 100km.

Local company Gravel Mob are carrying out the design and installation of the signage, which will be in place before the King GRAValley event in May.

The event will feature both a family ride for beginners and a more challenging ride for experienced cyclists.

Cyclists are expected to travel from all over Victoria and interstate to experience the event and to use the trails in an ongoing way.

The project will have two major benefits for the King Valley, giving the community a chance to come together after a challenging 2020, and providing a permanent tourism attraction to boost the economy.

Funding for the project was received through the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR) Community Recovery and Resilience Grants.
