To mark World Environment Day the Rural City of Wangaratta will be hosting a dinner event, with speakers exploring how our everyday practices at home can help the environment. The evening will take place on Tuesday 5th June, 2012 and involve environmental professionals from North East Victoria, in a panel discussion.The Eco Living trailer will display solar panels and ways to save energy and water at home. Do you want to know more about planting and caring for native plants? Sunday 29th July, 2012 is National Tree Planting Day. This year there will be a focus on learning how to plant species best suited to Wangaratta, and how you can plant for success in your garden. Planting will occur in the beautiful environment along our local creek lines. Been thinking about home sustainability but don't know where to start? Finding it hard to sort through the myriad of information out there? Get involved in sustainable house day on Sunday 9 September and visit a local sustainable home and talk to the owner about their journey and learnings. Hosted by the Wangaratta Sustainability Network and the Rural City of Wangaratta, sustainable house day gives you a chance to view local homes and gain ideas for improvements within your home. At the HP Barr Reserve visit Council’s Eco-Living Centre (Community Centre) where Council staff will be available to answer any questions. The Rural City of Wangaratta joins with local Landcare groups to showcase their latest achievements at the Wangaratta Show 12th - 13th October. If you are a Landcare group wishing to promote your works, then please contact the environment department on (03) 57220 888.
This very successful annual expo will be held on Saturday 6 October 2012, at the GO TAFE Rural Industries Tone Road Campus. More than 500 people attended last year's event to learn about solar power. wise water and energy use. This is a FREE community event hosted by the Rural City of Wangaratta and Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE, helping to educate residents on sustainable gardening, sustainable programs available and sustainable living ideas and solutions. National Water Week, held between 21-27 October 2012, is a recognised national awareness week aiming to help raise public awareness to improve the communities understanding of water issues in our region. Check the Wangaratta Chronicle in September for details of events.
Do you know where your waste is really going? Why do we have to recycle? Want answers? Then you should attend the travelling waste seminar, held during national recycling week (12-18 November 2012) an educational bus tour that takes the community directly to the issues, including the Wangaratta Recycling Centre and Bowser Landfill.
