The Landcare movement is active in the Rural City of Wangaratta with over 16 Landcare groups throughout the municipality. These groups work together to protect and enhance their local areas through conservation measures and sustainable land management.
Council supports all Landcare groups in roadside conservation works, regeneration projects and field days.
Major projects that have been undertaken through local groups include:
- Tourist self guided tour through Springhurst (contact Council’s customer service to gain a copy)
- Regeneration of waterway areas, including Kaluna Park in Wangaratta and Jessies Creek in Whitfield
- Many planting projects to restore habitats for local species such as the Grey Crowned Babbler
- Projects to improve soil quality and sustainable farming
