SAFETY

When cleaning up and repairing your property after a flood, take precautions to reduce the possibility of injury, illness or disease. The damage caused by a flood is not always obvious.  Such things as gas and electrical appliances can be dangerous after the impact of flood:

  • Gas supplies and appliances need to be checked by a qualified plumber.
  • Electricity supplies and appliances need to be declared safe by a qualified electrician prior to reoccupying the house, shed or outbuilding. For further information contact Council's Building Surveyor on (03) 5722 08181.
  • The structural integrity of your home and structures may be affected and this needs to be declared safe by Council's Building Surveyor. Contact Council on (03) 5722 8181 to arrange an inspection.
  • Wild animals including rodents, snakes or spiders may be trapped in and around your home - wear sturdy boots and gloves when cleaning up.
  • Drinking water may be contaminated. Do not drink any water unless you know it is safe. Further advice can be provided by contacting either the Department of Human Services or Council's Environmental Health Unit on (03) 5722 0888.
  • Flooding can cause excessive mould growth, which needs to be cleaned up before moving back into your home. Adequately ventilate rooms affected by moisture by opening doors and windows or using a fan.
