A Waste Wise Council

A Waste Wise Council

Council is committed to reducing waste output and reusing and recycling as much as is practical. An important part of achieving this has been recycling organics throughout the Wangaratta Government Centre worm farm as illustrated.

In working towards this committment Council achieved a ‘Silver’ certification under the Waste Wise Business Program showing that Council has implemented improved practices and significant resource efficiency.

A significant element of this approach has been the creation of the Wangaratta Government Centre "Wormfarm" situated  on the roof of the building.  This one wormfarm composts all the organic waste from the building. The compost is then returned to our parks and gardens as soil conditioner and liquid fertiliser.

This approach to being waste wise also extends beyond the offices to other Council venues, events and catering.  Since signing on to the Waste Wise program Council has reduced waste going to landfill by introducing set bins for each department throughout the Wangaratta Government Centre, enabling separate disposal of organics, rubbish, paper and other recyclables. Also implementing compulsory recycling at all community events requesting a waste service.  Avoidance of waste production is achieved through providing washable crockery and cutlery and employing Eco Buy principles.

Wangaratta Rural City Council is a waste wise council.
