Reigning Premiers Richmond will take on the Essendon Bombers in Wangaratta for the AFL JLT Series on 24 February 2018.

The blockbuster match is expected to be a sellout at the Norm Minns Oval, which hosted the two teams for a pre-season game in 2013.

It’s Wangaratta’s fourth AFL pre-season match since a major upgrade of the Showgrounds in 2011.

Councillor Dave Fuller, who holds the Sport and Recreation portfolio, said getting the match was a major coup for Wangaratta.

“To have two of the biggest clubs in the AFL return to Wangaratta is a major show of faith from the AFL,” he said.

“When the AFL comes to Wangaratta, fans turn up in big numbers and the events run excellently.

“It will deliver a direct benefit of more than $1m, plus flow on effects from overnight stays.

“The next day is the Wangaratta Marathon, while just a couple of weeks beforehand we’ll be hosting a huge community celebration for the Queen’s Baton Relay.

“We’ll also have our Summer in the Parks program running from December through to February.”

The Norm Minns Oval has a capacity of 11,000. Tickets will be sold through the AFL while the match will be broadcast on Fox Sports.
