Shed inspections aimed at preventing deaths

The Rural City of Wangaratta is encouraging all people living illegally in sheds to make contact with Council.

Council is launching a widespread investigation into illegal dwellings, following a Coronial inquest into the death of a man in his Shepparton shed in 2015.

The Coroner found Councils should play a greater role in using their authority under the Building Act 1993 and be alert to, investigate and deal with illegal building works within its district.

Council’s Municipal Building Surveyor Peter Sheridan said Council’s preference was to work with residents towards a positive outcome.

“We’re aware of a significant number of properties that we will need to look at,” he said.

“We will be contacting those residents in the next couple of weeks to arrange inspections.

“If you are living illegally in a shed, it is in your interests to contact Council so we can start working on a solution.

“Building regulations are there to ensure an acceptable level of health, safety and amenity is achieved.”

Anyone living illegally in a shed is encouraged to contact Council’s Building Services Department on 03 5722 0888.
