Transforming King George V Gardens and Ovens Street

Transforming King George V Gardens and Ovens Street Posted: 28-04-2017

Plans to improve King George V Gardens and reinforce its heritage design are currently on public exhibition.

The project is a key idea to come out of the Wangaratta Project: CBD Masterplan, which was adopted after extensive community consultation.

A Big Idea from the CBD Masterplan is to “Enhance King George V Gardens’ role as a place of contemplation and history”.

To achieve this Landscape Concept Designs for King George V Gardens and Ovens Street have been developed.

The plans include planting more trees and creating a park promenade along Ovens Street, and making the entrances to the park more visible.

The section of Ovens Street between Reid Street and Templeton Street would be transformed through installing two pedestrian crossings, replacing 45 degree parking with parallel parking along the park side of Ovens Street, as well as installing a tree lined median strip.

King George V Gardens would be enhanced through new sculptures, park furniture, upgraded picnic shelter, expanded garden beds, making the entrance to the park more visible and highlighting the historic gates. The community stage would also be removed, with capacity for a stage installation in another section of the park.

Landscape concept designs are on public exhibition until 19 May and can be viewed at the Wangaratta Government Centre or online at www.wangaratta.vic .gov.au.

Mayor Ken Clarke OAM said the public exhibition period had been extended by two weeks to allow more time for people to have input into the concept plans.

“King George V Gardens is a historic park and the green centerpiece of Wangaratta. These plans build on the park’s historic and botanic features. I encourage people to view these plans, ask questions and have their say,” he said.
