Fire will light up the Ovens Riverside Precinct for the winter instalment of Down by the River on 25 August.

Melbourne based entertainers, the Fireworks Dance Company will put on a fire twirling, dancing and fire breathing on the stock bridge, while lanterns made on the night will be scattered around the precinct.

Council’s Attractions and Events Coordinator James Vincent said the fire theme was inspired by winter.

“We want it to have that feel of warming up with your friends and family on a winter’s night. This is going to be a really upbeat, fun event, catering for all ages,” he said.

“All of the activities will be confined to the Riverside Precinct and the stock bridge, which is going to create this compact, party atmosphere.”

And the food will also have a fire flavor, with local businesses and event traders embracing the theme of smoke and fire. Rinaldo’s will be cooking a pig on a spit and George’s Espresso having a Maori-style Hangi.

“We’ve got the full support of the restaurants and cafes in Faithfull Street, including the Sydney Hotel, who will be open for the night,” he said.

“They’ve really helped drive what this event will look like and have taken ownership of the event.”

Stages will be set up in the Sydney Beach car park and the Riverside Square, with Sydney band High-Tails, Melbourne group Diet and Wangaratta’s DJ Sambury and Jeff Cabalar providing the entertainment.

There’s also a youth component to the event, with A FreeZa event to run from 4-6pm, with lantern making and a poi workshop.

Down by the River is on Friday, 25 August from 5.30pm – 9pm at the Ovens Riverside Precinct.
