Local Wine Industry Support

The Wangaratta Rural City Council is set to launch two subsidised wine education courses this May and July for restaurant, hotel, café and cellar-door hospitality staff within the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Partnering with GOTAFE Wangaratta, the courses aim to support the local wine industry.  The training will enhance service delivery standards and offer local hospitality staff an opportunity to better understand and appreciate wines of the region.

“The Rural City of Wangaratta is well aware of the many challenges facing the wine industry and in light of this, has recently developed the Regional Wine Industry Restructure Support Strategy.  Based on the assumption that restructure of the industry is inevitable, the new strategy outlines a series of initiatives to recognise and support the viticulture sector and ensure the industry retains a strong and commercially viable presence,” commented Emma Keith, Tourism Development Officer for the Rural City of Wangaratta.

“The wine courses are just one of the many initiatives that the Rural City of Wangaratta will be championing to grow the local market.”

The course, ‘An Introduction to the Wine Industry, Wine Styles and Local Varieties,’  is perfect for beginners and a great intermediate refresher for those who know a little bit about wine.  The focuses will be on the differences between the two local wine regions, the King Valley and Glenrowan, and the strong Italian heritage and unique varieties from the King Valley.

“Attendees will discover wines from their own backyard and taste them against wines from across Australia. Over this three-week, hands-on course, expert Wine Facilitator Alex Berry will teach local front-of-house hospitality staff about the wine industry in general and our local wine regions”.

“When staff working within the hospitality industry have a better understanding and appreciation of local wines, they can act as a champion for the region and help promote and of course sell locals wines in their respective work places. This is our goal,” said Ms Keith.

The course will be run twice, with opportunities for local hospitality staff to attend either the May or July intake. The three week course will run over three consecutive Monday evenings during May, and three consecutive Tuesday evenings during July.  Class sizes are limited to 20 people per course, so early bookings are advised.
