Residents are being asked to share what they love about their local environment in the lead up to World Environment Day.

The Rural City of Wangaratta has launched a photo competition on social media to encourage residents to share their favourite snap in and around Wangaratta.

Council’s Sustainability Education Officer, Emma Avery, said the initiative is designed to raise awareness of the natural beauty within the local environment.

“We are encouraging a wide variety of photos from the area, which could include your favourite nature spot up at the Warby Ranges or in the King Valley, your family and friends enjoying a day down by the Ovens River, or even photos from your own backyard,” she said.

To participate in the competition, photos must be taken within the Rural City of Wangaratta boundaries and must be uploaded to either Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #mywangaratta.

One lucky winner will take home an eco-friendly prize pack from Wangaratta Wholefoods, which includes sustainable fruit bags, organic tea and chocolate, and stainless steel drinking straws.

The competition is open until Saturday 3 June and the winner will be announced on World Environment Day, Monday 5 June.

The top 10 entries as well as the winning photo will be printed for display in the foyer of the Wangaratta Government Centre.
