Deliberative Democracy

Deliberative Democracy

Striving to improve the processes of community engagement, the Rural City of Wangaratta partnered with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Alpine Shire to undertake a process known as Deliberative Democracy in June 2010.

Used for the first time in north east Victoria, the Deliberative Democracy process differs from traditional methods of community engagement in that it involved randomly selecting participants.  An initial pool of 100 interested residents was gathered from a random telephone survey.  From this pool 20 residents were selected who reflected the local community demographic.

The selected participants formed a Citizen's Jury to deliberate over the question “how can we work together to respond to a varying climate”.

Following an extensive two and a half day process of deliberation, which was enhanced by information provided by expert speakers and facilitators, the Citizen's Jury was ready to present their recommendations.

This process has again shown the enormous amount of creativity, expertise and passion in our community.  Council has now assessed the recommendations and will consider their integration into future Council Plans and strategies.

As part of these processes there will once again be opportunities for the broader community to make comment and have input.
