Work Experience and Work Placement

Council offers work experience and practical work placement for students to assist them in developing and enhancing their skills and knowledge while being exposed to the 'real' world of local government.

Students interested in completing their work experience or practical work placement with Council should contact Council's Manager - Human Resources on (03) 5722 0718 or email council@wangaratta.vic.gov.au .

Career Building Program

Due to skills shortage in a number of areas across local government, the Rural City of Wangaratta offers the opportunity for one to two people per year to work for twelve months prior to commencing their university studies.Council will consider paying a $5,000 per annum scholarship per person to assist with living and study costs while they attend university.  On completion of studies, Council will then consider offering an opportunity to continue working for Council on an ongoing basis.  Areas of skills shortage are given priority (ie. civil engineering, town planning, environmental health, child care).

Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Cadetships

Council supports apprentices and trainees by providing opportunities for people to develop practical, on the job skills while obtaining a recognised certificate.  Apprenticeships are generally available in the outdoor physical environment including horticulture, arboriculture and motor mechanics. Traineeships are generally offered in administration.  Cadetships are generally offered in areas that require specialised skills (ie. building, planning) and are full time positions complemented with supported study of a diploma or degree.
