Ovens Riverside Precinct

Ovens Riverside Precinct

The Ovens Riverside Project will create an improved riverside precinct through the construction of a promenade and boardwalk, a civic square and a plaza. The civic square will be central to the development, featuring shade trees and incorporating amphitheatre style seating for cultural events. The riverside promenade and boardwalk will provide pedestrian access to the Ovens River and dramatically improve the amenity of Wangaratta’s northern CBD entrance.

On Wednesday, 13 June 2012 the Minister for Regional Australia, Simon Crean, announced that the Commonwealth Government would provide $2.5 million towards the final stage (Stage 3) of the Ovens Riverside Project.

The funding pledge from the Commonwealth Government  comes within days of the announcement by the Member for Murray Valley, Tim McCurdy, that the State Government would also provide $715,000 towards the project.

The $5.22 million Ovens Riverside Project encompasses three stages:

Stage 1 (Complete)

  • Concept Design
  • Planning Scheme Amendment
  • Land Acquisition for the Ovens Riverside Square
  • Demolition of the building on the site

Stage 2 (Complete)

  • Construction of Ovens River Link – (A new 2.5 metre wide shared asphalt pathway, which extends from the Wangaratta Showgrounds through to Wangaratta’s Central Business District , crossing the Ovens River twice via two suspension bridges.  Funding for the $854,000 project was provided through a $300,000 grant from the State Government, $254,000 from the Federal Government and $300,000 from Council.)

Stage 3 - $3.3 million  (2.5 M Commonwealth  $715,000 State)

  • Construction of the Ovens Riverside Square and Bickerton Plaza (Bickerton Plaza involves landscaping and pathways at the end of Bickerton Street)

  • Construction of a boardwalk suspended from the high bank of the river from the Ovens Riverside Square through to Murphy Street.

The Ovens Riverside Project will transform the Ovens Riverside area, creating an attractive cosmopolitan environment for Wangaratta’s northern CBD entrance.  Work will commence immediately and is expected to be completed by the middle of 2013.
